LOS ANGELES SLIM LIPO® FAQ’S

What is laser-assisted liposuction?

Los Angeles SlimLipo®, or laser-assisted liposuction, is a revolutionary new technology in which a carefully calibrated laser is used to liquefy or “melt” unwanted fat, just prior to removing the fat with liposuction. There are numerous advantages with laser-assisted liposuction over traditional liposuction including significantly less downtime, less bruising and swelling, and greater skin tightening effects.

What is tumescent anesthesia liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction refers to the anesthetic fluid that is injected just prior to laser-assisted liposuction. It contains local anesthetic, saline, and Epinephrine, which all facilitate fat removal, reduced blood loss, and less bruising after your procedure.

Who is the ideal candidate for laser-assisted liposuction?

The ideal laser-assisted liposuction candidate is a patient who is in good overall health, maintains a healthy lifestyle, but has one or more problems areas that are unresponsive to diet or exercise. Liposuction should not be viewed as a replacement for weight loss. Realistic expectations about the results of the procedure are important.

On what areas of the body can Los Angeles Slim Lipo® be performed?

Laser-assisted liposuction is effective in treating the same areas as traditional liposuction, including the upper and lower abdomen, waist, hips, outer and inner thighs, back, upper arms, neck, and chest.

What should I expect during my initial SlimLipo® consultation?

Your initial consultation with Dr. Hoefflin is an opportunity for you to discuss your desired aesthetic goals. It is helpful to bring a list of questions and concerns that can be specifically addressed. During your consultation, customized literature that discusses the procedure will be provided. Additionally, digital photographs of similar patients will be reviewed. Dr. Hoefflin believes digital photography can be a valuable tool in understanding the benefits and limitations of brachioplasty surgery.

What can I expect from the recovery process?

After your liposuction, you’ll be discharged home with compression garments and gauze covering the treated areas. Garment use is encouraged for the first two to four weeks to reduce post-operative swelling and maintain comfort. After liposuction, patients may experience mild bruising, swelling, and local discomfort from several days to several weeks after their procedure. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Endermologie® by LPG is begun several days after your procedure to help diminish any swelling, assist in healing and speeding your recovery. Patients can return to work and other regular activities several days to one week after their procedure.

How long will the results of my liposuction last?

The results of liposuction can be long lasting, as long as patients maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. If substantial weight is gained after the procedure, localized fat pockets may return.

What types of anesthesia are used?

Dr. Hoefflin performs his SlimLipo® as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with deep sedation, as administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. When performed in combination with other plastic surgery procedures, general anesthesia may be used. When small pockets of hereditary fat are targeted, the procedure can be performed with the office. The procedure usually takes about one to three hours, depending upon the desired level of liposculpting. All operations are performed in fully credentialed and state-of-the-art surgical facilities.

Does laser-assisted liposuction require incisions?

The procedure is performed through small, inconspicuous 1/4″ incisions that become nearly, if not completely, invisible in time. Prior to liposuction, a local anesthesia solution (tumescent anesthesia) provides patients with minimal postoperative bruising and swelling. Small meticulously placed sutures are used to close all incisions.

Are there advantages to liposuction?

There are no substitutes for maintaining a healthly lifestyle, such as eating properly and exercising regularly. However, many patients, in spite of a low fat diet and regular exercise routine, continue to have problematic areas of fat accumulation, or lipodystrophy. Liposuction can specifically treat such resistance areas of lipodystrophy.

What is Endermologie?

Endermologie® by LPG is a FDA-approved, non-invasive technology that uses a safe and non-surgical patented technique that helps stimulate local blood circulation with deep, soothing motions that are clinically proven to reduce the appearance of cellulite and assist with swelling after liposuction surgery. The final result is a more quickly achieved smooth and sculpted body appearance.

Most patients tell us they feel much better than expected following their surgery and are able to return to work and social activities within several days to one week following their procedure.

When can I resume working out?

Patients can return back to light or non-strenuous workouts after several weeks, with a full return to all activities after four to six weeks. Premature participation in strenuous activities can prolong your swelling and lead to unanticipated complications.

What are the risks of laser-assisted liposuction?

When performed by a properly qualified plastic surgeon, the risk of serious problems after SlimLipo® are rare. Most complications are minor, temporary, and can be easily resolved with conservative treatment and time. Complications may include bleeding, infection, skin burns, prolonged swelling, scarring, or unsatisfactory aesthetic result. You can reduce your risk of complications by closely following your surgeon’s instructions, both before and after surgery.

Dr. Hoefflin and his staff will supply you with a list of pre-operative instructions, including medications to avoid, in the days and weeks leading up to your arm lift surgery. Importantly, these instructions include quitting smoking as it can have deleterious effects on wound healing and your final result.

Why is important to chose a board-certified plastic surgeon?

Your selection of a surgeon is as important as your decision to undergo cosmetic surgery itself. Many patients do not know that in most states, a licensed physician may perform plastic surgery without being board-certified in plastic surgery. This means someone not trained in Plastic Surgery could be performing your surgery.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only plastic surgery board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Selecting a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery provides that your physician has completed the necessary and extensive training to perform plastic surgery and help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

What can I do to minimize my risk of bruising?

Aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, Advil, and virtually all non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents thin the blood and can promote bruising. In addition, anything herbal, red wine, and homeopathic medications can do the same. To minimize bruising, it’s advisable to avoid these products for 10 days before your procedure.
