Mommy Makeover

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover usually refers to a custom-tailored set of plastic surgery procedures a woman can get after having children. It rejuvenates and restores the pre-baby body, often by addressing the breasts and tummy.

Why get a Mommy Makeover?

As one of the most popular cosmetic procedures available, mommy makeover combines breast and tummy rejuvenation to provide a comprehensive transformation. By delivering both breast and tummy procedures in a single surgery, mothers benefit from holistic restoration of their former body—and sometimes even an improvement upon that. All told, mommy makeover patients are among the happiest in the entire field, as they can enjoy motherhood with restored confidence.

Typically a mommy makeover is a combination of two or three cosmetic procedures such as breast augmentations, breast lifts, tummy tucks, or liposuction. However, it is possible for other procedures to be included in a mommy makeover. Plastic surgeon Dr. Hoefflin takes care to discusses all available options with his patients. He is renowned for his expert care and ability to restore patients to their natural, pre-pregnancy figure.

About the Procedure

Mommy makeovers vary greatly depending on the combination of plastic surgery procedures being performed. In all cases, Dr. Hoefflin places an emphasis on creating a natural appearance and doing everything possible to minimize scaring.

How long do Mommy Makeovers take?

Mommy Makeovers last anywhere from two to four hours depending on which combination of procedures are performed. Dr. Hoefflin performs this surgery as an outpatient procedure in his state-of-the-art, fully credentialed surgical facility. Patients are usually under general anesthesia or deep intravenous sedation administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist.

Incision Types

Breasts implants are placed in the body thought one of four common incision locations: around or along the bottom of the areola (periareolar), along the natural fold where the breast meets the chest wall (inframammary), through the top area of the breast near the armpit (transaxillary), or through an incision made in the belly button (transumbilical or scarless breast augmentation).

Tummy tuck incisions are located very low on the abdomen and are usually low enough that they cannot be seen, even when wearing a bikini.

Breast lift incisions are typically made around the areola and can sometimes extend below the breast towards the crease where the breast meets the chest.

Liposuction incisions are very small (1/4″), and are scattered inconspicuously around the treatment area. The incisions are so small that they heal very quickly and typically become almost impossible to see.

Breast Implant Location

Dr. Hoefflin performs breast augmentations using the specialized “dual-plane” technique. Using this technique, he places part of the implant below the pectoral muscle and part of the implant above it. This gives a slight lift to the breast, provides long-lasting results, and offers a natural, youthful appearance.

What should I expect after surgery?

Dr. Hoefflin’s mommy makeover patients usually have small, self absorbing sutures that do not need to be removed. Patients are discharged home and experience very little pain due to the anesthetics used during the procedure and the oral pain medications prescribed for post-operative comfort. Patients are able to return to work and social activities within seven to ten days. Light exercise can be resumed after several weeks, with a full return to all activities after four to six weeks. Final results can be appreciated anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months after surgery.

Possible Complications

When performed by a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon, the risk of serious problems after a mommy makeover are rare. During your consultation, Dr. Hoefflin will discuss specific risks with you as well as whether or not you are a suitable candidate for a mommy makeover. As always, you can reduce your risk of complications by closely following Dr. Hoefflin’s pre- and post-operative instructions.

Who is a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

Cosmetic surgery can be a godsend, and in the hands of a highly-skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Hoefflin, a mommy makeover is life-changing. It is important to understand that this surgical procedure is not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle, including maintaining a healthy diet and an exercise program.

While living a healthy life is always important in keeping your body firm – but pregnancy and breastfeeding can take a toll that no amount of dieting or exercise can correct. If this is what happened to you after pregnancy and breastfeeding, you are likely a good candidate for a mommy makeover:

  • Saggy, droopy, or deflated breasts
  • Stretched tummy skin and muscles
  • Abdominal muscles appear split
  • Stretch marks
  • Love handles and other lingering fatty deposits

To be safe to undergo a surgical procedure requires the following:

  • You are in good health, and do not have any chronic condition or illness that requires your immediate attention or would prevent you from being eligible for other kinds of surgery.
  • Independent of the current state of your body contour, your body weight is the range that you would consider right for you, and you could expect to be able to stay at or near this weight into the future.
  • You have a good understanding of the results that you can expect, and your expectations are in alignment with what your surgeon is confident will be achieved.

You can get a clear answer regarding your eligibility for a mommy makeover through a consultation with our plastic surgeon. This initial consultation is an excellent opportunity to view before and after photographs of cases that are similar to yours and discuss what procedures will be necessary to restore your body to its pre-baby appearance – or better.

I’m Planning to Have Children – Should I Wait?

A “mommy makeover” is a custom set of surgical procedures specifically to resolve damage to the body as a result of pregnancy and breastfeeding. As a subsequent pregnancy could once again cause stretched skin, split muscles, or saggy breasts, it is advisable to wait to restore your body with a mommy makeover until your childbearing years are over.

When that time comes, it is advised to wait at least six months after your last pregnancy before scheduling the procedure, and four months after you have stopped breastfeeding. If you are considering the procedure in the future or have questions about what will be involved in restoring your body to a firmer, tauter, youthful look, we invite to meet with us in a private consultation.
