A forehead lift is commonly performed in combination with other complimentary cosmetic plastic surgery procedures, such as a facelift (rhytidectomy) or laser skin resurfacing to enhance the overall aesthetic result. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) may be performed at the same time as a forehead lift, especially if a patient has significant skin overhang in the upper eyelids.

During your consultation with Dr. Hoefflin, he will determine if you are in fact a good candidate for forehead or browlift surgery, and if the upper eyelids need to be simultaneously addressed. Customized literature that discusses the procedure, along with pre- and post-operative instructions will be provided. Before and after photographs of similar forehead lift patients will be reviewed.

About the Procedure

Dr. Hoefflin performs his forehead lifts as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with deep sedation, administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. The procedure usually takes 1 hour. All operations are performed in fully credentialed and state-of-the-art surgical facilities.

Dr. Hoefflin uses the latest in endoscopic (camera-assisted) surgery techniques to elevate the brow without any visible incisions. Small incisions are placed within the hairline and carefully beveled to preserve any hair loss at the incision site.

This technique of smaller incision surgery involves a relatively shorter recovery time and is associated with few complications compared to the open technique. For patients with long or high foreheads, incisions can be placed in front of the hairline (pre-trichial) to correct forehead length.

During the procedure, the forehead skin is elevated and repositioned to a more youthful level. The muscles causing forehead wrinkling are weakened or removed. Thus, the eyebrows are raised, and the excess forehead lines are smoothed out. The result is a more youthful and balanced appearance in the forehead.

What to expect after surgery?

Head dressings are placed, which are usually removed within the first day after surgery. Slight discomfort (similar to a headache) is normal. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Head elevation for two to three days is encouraged to minimize any swelling. Sutures or staples are removed within 7-10 days after surgery. Minor swelling and bruising can be concealed with camouflaging makeup after 7 to 10 days. Long-acting nerve blocks are performed to minimize any post-operative discomfort. While individual results may vary, the results of a forehead lift typically lasts 10 years.

Possible Complications

The risk of complications is usually minor when a forehead lift is performed by a properly qualified plastic surgeon. Major complications are rare. Specific risks and the suitability of a forehead lift procedure for a given individual can be determined at the time of consultation. You can reduce your risk of complications by closely following your surgeon’s instructions, both before and after surgery.
