Tuberous Breast Correction

Tuberous breasts (also known as tubular breasts or constricted breast deformity) is a common congenital breast deformity that occurs in both men and women.

While the exact cause is not known, plastic surgeons frequently commonly correct tuberous breasts through a combination of breast augmentation and breast lifts.

Women with tubular breasts present to plastic surgeons demonstrating many of the same anatomic features: small and tight breasts, an abnormally narrow breast base, large areolas that are puffy and protrude, with tight breast skin below the nipple. This lower pole or base constriction results in poorly defined inframammary fold, sagging or ptosis, as well as a bulging or herniated areolar complex appearance.

Significant improvements in both size and shape be accomplished through placement of either saline or silicone breast implants. After breast implant surgery, your breasts will appear more “shapely” and “full.” The result is an improvement in a woman’s sense of self-esteem and self-image.+

During your consultation with Dr. Hoefflin, he will assist you in choosing between the various types and shapes of both saline and silicone gel breast implants. Customized literature that discusses the breast enhancement procedure will be provided. Before and after photographs of similar tuberous breast correction patients will be reviewed.

About the procedure

Dr. Hoefflin performs tuberous breast treatments as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia or deep intravenous sedation, as administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. The procedure generally takes about 2 hours. All operations are performed in fully-credentialed and state-of-the-art surgical facilities.

Implant Location

Dr. Hoefflin utilizes the specialized “dual-plane” breast augmentation technique, in which a portion of the breast implant is placed above the pectoral muscle, and a portion beneath. The result is a more natural and youthful appearance. In addition, this procedure creates a more natural appearance of the inframammary fold.

What to expect after tuberous breast correction surgery

Our patients are surprisingly free of discomfort due to the long-acting local anesthetic injections and nerve blocks. Any discomfort will be easily controlled with oral pain medication. Small and meticulously placed self-absorbing sutures are usually dissolved within seven days.

Most patients tell us they feel better than expected following their tuberous breast correction surgery and return to work and social activities within one week. Light exercise can be resumed at two weeks. Final results will be achieved in 6 weeks to 3 months after surgery.

The breasts are enlarged by placing soft breast implants though the lower edge of the areola (periareolar) or around the areolar (circumferential). Internal incisions create space for the breast implants to settle into a more natural position.
